Axis of Authoritarians? Scrutinizing China, Russia, and Iran Cooperation
Authoritarian powers appear to be coalescing into a bloc united in its opposition to a global coalition of liberal democracies. Those illiberal states are further seeking to influence non-aligned countries, particularly in the developing world. What motivates leaders in Beijing, Moscow, and Tehran to deepen their cooperation with each other? How far are they willing to go? What specific challenges does this trend create for Washington?
This session will feature CNAS experts on China, Russia, and Iran in an “around the horn”-style discussion examining this emerging trend, assessing the different decision calculi in the states they focus on, and drawing out the implications for the United States and like-minded allies and partners.
