U.S.-China Policy in The Balance
U.S. policy toward China has undergone a reckoning that started late in the Obama administration, accelerated quickly during the Trump administration, and has now carried through to the Biden administration. A consensus now holds that the period in U.S.-China policy broadly known as engagement has ended and been replaced by strategic competition with Beijing. Still, Washington has not resolved some core policy dilemmas, which deserve greater consideration in the context of Russia’s war in Ukraine. This panel will explore the most pressing challenges and trade-offs facing U.S. China policy today and draw out different schools of thought on how to approach them.
